The metal products and engineering sector in Palestine produces a wide range of
products including welding electrodes, tie, wire and steel nails, mineral,
tube oils for vehicle motors and machinery, office furniture, warehouse
shelving, household utensils, industrial scales, agricultural equipment,
industrial machinery and tools, abrasives and others. This industry covers an
estimated 60-80% from the consumption of its products in local markets and is
increasingly successful in export markets .The annual growth rate of this sector
is estimated at 4%. Total investment in the sector is estimated at $50 million.
UNION OF METAL INDUSTRIES AND ENGINEERING
The Union of Metal and Engineering Industries has a general assembly which
consists of 50 members in Gaza and 18 members in west bank. There is also aboard
of directors, which administer the union. Whom are 11 members representing the
largest companies in the sector are mentioned in the enclosed table.
- The following are among the objectives of the
union:
- Representation of members' common interests to
public sector institutions and others on matters
affecting the welfare of the industry -- e.g.
taxation
- Facilitation of legal procedures
involving Israeli authorities
- Exploring and opening new export markets
- Providing training and technical assistance
opportunities for members
Exports:
Two leading companies, Neiroukh Co and Alshark Electrod Co., have exported to
Greece, Jordan, Egypt and Jordan. Alshark Electrod Company exports of welding
electrod rods and wires total $700,000 a year. Neiroukh Company exports of
scales to Jordan total $200,000 a year. The Union also aims at assisting and
coordinating exports for its members.
